The Treatment and Follow Up

Warm up

Using effleurage which used to warm the soft tissues and muscles which the flat of the hand.  Stimulating the relaxation of the nervous system and increasing blood flow to the tissues.

Connective tissue release

Relieving the connective tissue will help to release pain and increase flexibility to the area.  It is almost immediate most of the time, giving the client much needed relief.

Deep tissue

The therapist will work on the relevant muscles, using a variety of deep tissue techniques to relieve the problem.  The techniques used more consistently are:  Trigger Point Therapy, Soft Tissue Release, Muscular Energy Techniques and stretching.

Homework

Usually exercises will be given so the client has the know how to continue the improvements from the treatment.  Homework may include stretches, strengthening, rest, ice and potentially heat.

After effects

You may feel light headed following the treatment.  Massage can lower blood pressure slightly which then may make you feel light headed.  You may feel very thirsty.

Drink plenty of water for at least 24 hours following treatment.  Do not pursue heavy exercise, lifting or manual work if possible.  The muscles should be given time to rest as the affect of the massage may make them feel weaker.

Follow through

Injuries and problems usually need more than one massage.  It is impossible to say how many treatments are needed as everyone reacts differently to treatments.  My aim is to assess the situation and treat as effectively as possible.  Diagnosis may be needed, so referral to a medical practitioner may be required to effectively treat the problem.

Maintenance

When the client’s problem is alleviated, a maintenance plan may be suggested.  It is entirely the client’s decision whether to take it up.  The client will however have the knowledge and information for their own maintenance.
